YOUTH CONSERVATION CAMP for a camper application click here.
Every year GFP partners with South Dakota Wildlife Federation to hold our Youth Conservation Camp (YCC) for high school students. This is a week long camp in the Black Hills where the students are immersed in Conservation classes, shooting classes, hunting classes, fishing classes and many more outdoor skills classes. Also, Custer State Park staff takes them for a day of hikes and conservation classes such as Buffalo Management, Fire management, Range Management, and Forestry. The Outdoor Campus West staff takes them for a day and exposes them to all sorts of wonderful hands-on outdoor skills opportunities. For another two days both partner NGO’s (Turkey Federation, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, Western SD Bird Dog Association, Custer Search and Rescue, Black Hills Walleye group, and Run-2-Gun) and GFP staff teach hands-on, intensive outdoor classes. In the evenings the Wildlife Federation brings in inspiring guest speakers and takes them to the lighting ceremony at Mount Rushmore. This year on Friday, June 10 we even have an amazing give back to Conservation day were the students will be partnering with GFP Aquatic Habitat staff, Rocky Mountain Elk Federation, Forest Service, and GFP Terrestrial Conservation staff where the students will be helping with lake restoration, setting fish structures, creating fishing access, and on the Meeker Ranch they will be removing fences, building analog beaver dams, and repairing guzzlers alongside adult volunteers. Many of the past year’s students have gone on to become wildlife and fishery biologists, as well as Conservation Officers plus we have created hundreds of advocates for conservation. Camp starts on June 5 so we need these as soon as possible. We have also lowered the age limit from 16 to 14, opening it to younger students. The cost of the week long camp is $350 which includes bussing to the camp from all over the state and we offer financial help available for students that can’t afford to attend.

2022-23 Meals: Notice is given that free meals will end at the close of this school year. Congress voted against covering school meal costs going forward into the 2022-23 school year. Starting in the fall of 2022, parents/guardians will again be responsible for paying for school meals. We urge you to plan ahead now. Please fill out the 2021-22 form in order to provide for a 30-day grace period in the fall, giving you more time to complete it for the 2022-23 school year. The 2022-23 application will become available in the fall.
